The Myth of the "Single Pane of Glass" in Operations

Walk the floor of almost any plant and count the screens. 

The OEE board on the wall, the SCADA station by the line, the maintenance queue on a supervisor's laptop, the quality report someone still exports to a spreadsheet before the morning meeting. Now count how many of them agree with each other. For twenty years the industry has sold a cure for exactly this, the single pane of glass, one place where all of it finally comes together. Plants have bought it more than once. The screens keep multiplying anyway.

The promise lands because it quietly conflates two entirely different problems. Vendors define a single pane of glass as a dashboard that turns scattered signals into a single source of truth. But a pane is just a surface you look through, while a source of truth is what is actually happening on the floor. Treating viewing and truth as the same thing is where operations gets stuck. Consolidating what you look at optimizes for viewing, but it does nothing to guarantee that the underlying data is trustworthy, nor does it ensure anything happens once you see it.

The mistake was never wanting things unified. It was putting the word "single" on the wrong layer. What operations need to be consolidated is not the glass, but the operational truth beneath it, and that truth is built through Data Orchestration. Once that truth is established, one screen is the last thing you want. You need purpose-built workflows that automatically turn data into business execution.

Same Dream, New Costume

Operational technology has its own version of the promise, and it is having a moment. The unified namespace, a single real-time hub that every system publishes to and reads from, is spreading fast through industrial circles as the fix for spaghetti integration and dashboards that disagree. On the narrow problem of getting systems to share data, it works, and it beats point-to-point wiring handily.

But listen to how its own advocates describe it. A unified namespace, they will tell you, is a single access point to data. The word doing the work there is access, not action. The namespace makes the same live reading available to SCADA, to the historian, to any dashboard that subscribes, and then hands the reading back to a human and waits. Tidier than the pane of glass, and structurally identical. The industrial single source of truth turned out to be a very well organized place to go look.

The Wrong Optimization

Truth on the floor has to be built before it can be shown. In an office, the data is already digital and mostly clean, so consolidating views is a reasonable goal. On a factory floor, that truth does not exist out of the box. A controller emits a raw number and a vibration sensor emits another, but neither means anything until something correlates them and figures out that a temperature spike only matters alongside a specific vibration signature on a specific asset. No amount of glass does that work.

Consolidation also fights the wrong enemy. The 2025 MuleSoft Connectivity Benchmark found the average organization now running 897 applications, only 29 percent of them integrated, a ratio that slips further every year. Chasing one screen to sit on top of a stack that keeps growing is a treadmill, and the plant floor is where it runs fastest, since every new machine, protocol, and line adds another source that was never built to agree with the rest.

And suppose you win anyway. A maintenance tech, a quality engineer, and a plant manager all staring at the exact same screen is not a solved problem. They do not need the same view because they need different things to happen. The tech needs a work order with the asset ID and fault code attached. The quality lead needs suspect parts held before the next pallet ships. The manager needs none of that detail and all of the business consequence. One screen serving all three is a compromise none of them asked for.

Move the Single Downstream

So put the word single where it earns its keep. Not on the pane, and not on the data hub, but on the layer just above the raw signal, where a reading becomes a fact with meaning attached. The difference is not cosmetic. A raw signal on a screen still needs a person to read it and decide. Stranded data, the readings that exist but never reach anything that acts, stops being the floor's default condition.

The Panes You Actually Want

Once the truth is solid and singular, the many stops being a problem and becomes the whole point. You do not want one pane. You want as many as there are jobs to be done, each attached to an action rather than a stare.

Think about a fire in a building. The alarm panel tells you where it is, which is useful and, on its own, completely inert. What saves the building is the sprinkler system: one detection event, and a dozen coordinated actions fire at once, water in the right zone, alarms to the right people, the fire service called, the dampers shut. Nobody had to be watching the panel. Operations has spent two decades buying better and better alarm panels and calling it transformation. The event should trip the sprinklers.

That shift, from a screen that waits for a human to a workflow that acts on a trusted event, is orchestration, and it is where the return actually lives. ABB's 2023 Value of Reliability research, drawn from more than 3,200 plant maintenance leaders, put a single hour of unplanned downtime near $125,000, and a 2025 Fluke Corporation survey found it still costing manufacturers as much as $852 million a week across the sector. Those losses pile up in the minutes between a signal appearing and a person noticing it. A pane cannot close that gap. An action can.

A single pane of glass was always an odd thing to want, when you really think about it. Glass is for looking through, and operations does not get paid to look. It gets paid to act. The fastest way to act on operational truth is to stop cramming it onto one screen, and start orchestrating it as one trusted source into everything capable of taking action.
